ABOUT BEECH TREE THERAPY

Beech Tree Therapy was established by Marie Cumiskey to offer a range of different supports to help clients reconnect with self and others.

Working with people is my passion and I am fortunate to be able to work in an area where I can support people to grow and develop their own self in a non-judgmental way, rich in meaning and purpose.  I help people to explore the most sensitive of issues in the safety and security of a compassionate, comfortable and confidential space.

My approach to counselling and psychotherapy is integrative, incorporating Person Centred, Humanistic, and Existential therapies with cognitive behavioural therapies such as Reality Therapy and more. Just as no two individuals are the same, no two clients' needs will be the same; and so I will tailor the counselling to meet the needs of the individual client.

However, I like to approach therapy by helping to keep things simple, by using an approach that people can relate to in terms of their day-to-day experience. I like to help people find their feet in whatever situation they find themselves in and ease their immediate distress by, for example, stilling the worry that drives their anxiety or the self-rebuke that feeds their depression and help them towards responding to painful emotions in more helpful ways. I like to help people focus on how they can deal with their difficulties in the here and now without necessarily going over a painful past; and I have always taken the view that people's natural ability to cope is what they most need to realise with the help of their therapist in order to give them a longer term confidence in knowing how to stay well.

Having completed my training in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy through IICP, I am a fully accredited member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (www.iacp.ie).

Prior to my training in this area I qualified as a Guidance Counsellor in DCU and continue to work in this field. As is best practice I continue to work with my supervisors in both areas.

I continue to work with students who are looking for additional support and guidance in their career directions.

I represented Kilkenny/Carlow on the Institute of Guidance Counsellors (www.igc.ie) board of directors from 2017-2019 and also served as a board member to the Children's Rights Alliance (www.childrensrights.ie) from 2018-2019.

I have strong roots in farming and from this base recognise the overwhelming benefits of our connection to nature.
